RUSH: Hello, Mark, I’m not surprised — here it is, you debuted at
No. 1 on Amazon. I know you poured everything you’ve got into
writing this book, and you hope and pray that not only will people
read it, but that they’ll get it — and you’re off to the races now.
Before we get into the details, I have to ask: are you confident that
something can happen from this?
LEVIN: You know, I’ve decided I can’t figure out the endgame for
our country, so my attitude is to just keep plowing ahead. Never
surrender. Never give in to this. My goal here is to start a debate,
and see if other people want to participate and spread the word to
their friends, their neighbors, and their coworkers. I have no illusions about how difficult it is to reestablish a Constitutional Republic and restore this nation. But I also know that it took the left 100
years to take us where we are today.
I’m not sure where this will end, but I do know for future generations we have to take a stand, and we have to take a stand now.
I’ve written about political philosophy, and conservatism, and the
Supreme Court, and we can analyze this a thousand different ways.
You do such a superb job of that each and every day, and you have
for a quarter of a century. I just thought I needed to dig inside me
and answer the question I’m asked all the time: “What do we do
about this?”
RUSH: That’s the question. It’s been the question. People want to do
something besides vote, and now you’ve given them a roadmap.
We’re going to get into specifics here, but one more general question
about the makeup of the country. It’s undeniable that we have an
unknown percentage who can be described as no-information,
clueless, don’t care, unaware, improperly educated. Is it necessary to
reach them in order to achieve the reversal in direction? Can it be
done without them, by dragging them along?
LEVIN: Well, I hope it can be done without most of them, because
millions of people in this country — though I don’t think it’s the
majority, really — have been conquered by this system, or have surrendered to it, as Alexis de Tocqueville talked about so often. And
look, some of these folks are ideologues, too. But when you look at
the American Revolution, just 35 percent of the colonists were in
favor of the Revolution. When you look worldwide, even at revolutions we detest, it’s not the overwhelming majority of the people
who begin the revolution as the activists. It is really a committed
group of people —not millions, but a committed group of people
— who are prepared to do something more in order to advance
their cause.
And our cause is a righteous cause. Our cause is the preservation
of liberty and the restoration of this Republic, which I feel has, in
many respects, slipped away from us. So I think we have reason to
be optimistic, and hopeful, and to have aspirations here about a
plan forward that our Framers left to us.
RUSH: Now, that’s the key. That’s what’s fascinating to me about
your book. In your words, “The circle of liberty is getting smaller
and smaller.” How did it happen, in your view, that elections are no
longer sufficient as a reliable means of reform?
